All about BIS Certification

In this age of globalization, international commerce is expanding at a fast rate, and as a direct result, industrial and import/export enterprises are also expanding at an alarming rate. There is a certain obligation of compliance and regulatory requirements that must be fulfilled before implementing any products into the market. This is true whether you are an importer, a trader, a supplier, or most importantly, a manufacturer; given the role you hold, you are responsible for meeting these obligations.

The Bureau of Indian Standards (BIS) is a National Standard Body that was founded in 1986 as a result of the passage of the BIS Act. It is in charge of regulating the quality assurance process in India to assure the quality, security, and trustworthiness of products.

What is the importance of BIS Certification?

Unsafe practice is a huge hazard to both life and property and BIS is here to safeguard your products. BIS Certification is the indication of security, integrity, and dependability to the consumers.  Keeping in view the public welfare, the government of India has made BIS certification essential for certain electronic devices and it is necessary to bear the BIS standard mark on the specified products.

To provide safety, uniformity, and top-notch labeling within a fully responsible and legible system for your manufactured products, you will need a BIS License. This will ultimately cater to your customers, which will ultimately create a sense of guarantee and trust among your customers. The BIS certification is not a general standard that applies to all items; rather, each product is managed according to a specific Indian Standard.

What is the purpose of BIS Certification?

The following are some of the reasons why the government of India is pushing for more businesses to obtain BIS Certification:

  • To protect the general public's health.

  • To give quality assurance.

  • To safeguard the consumer against possibly harmful or dangerous items.

  • To boost confidence among customers.

The Benefits of BIS Certification

The most important advantage of having a BIS certificate is the legal benefits, which include the ability to manufacture items without interruption and to bring imports into the country without being questioned. Foremost, you don't have to hurry to get the certificate to fulfill the government contract, and you also don't have to be afraid of being caught.

Because it verifies that your product was produced under the guidelines established by the BIS, BIS certification is considered to be significant in the eyes of the law. As a result, it ensures products of superior quality, and your product will have a distinctive character, which will be recognized through the BIS-approved logo.

In addition, the manufacturing of your product will be prohibited in India as well as in any other countries where it is sold if it is included on the list of mandatory products but does not have the certification required by the BIS.

Besides this, the criminal would be subject to imprisonment for up to two years or a fine of at least two lakh rupees, or both, depending on the severity of the crime.

Competitive Advantage:

Obtaining a BIS Certificate for your product not only provides significance to your product but also provides you with a competitive advantage over other businesses in your industry. A product's BIS certification attests to its validity, authenticity, and safety also ensuring that it is pure.

Even while a certified product could make a quick profit in terms of gross sales, it will never be able to maintain its reputation and the confidence of its target market. In addition, products that lack proper certification are of poor quality and may pose a threat to one's health. On the other hand, a certified product is guaranteed to be of particularly high quality.

Because of this, the consumer can make an informed decision and would almost certainly choose certified products because BIS-certified products do not raise any questions about their validity and instead guarantee their viability.

Besides this, every manufacturing company, irrespective of the place of origin of the manufacturer, is required to acquire the BIS certification to maintain uninterrupted product sales in India.

Assure Quality Standards:

For every manufacturer, BIS has taken a "comprehensive" approach to make sure quality standards are met. Now, companies that are registered with the BIS have to follow certain rules when they make goods.

In addition, BIS-certified products are tested in the lab to make sure they meet all of the BIS requirements. Now, random samples of the product are taken from the manufacturing units and sent to the lab for testing. The BIS certification is given to the product because the lab said that it meets the standards. Because of this, it is good.

Even though the process is always the same, it can be time-consuming, but it must be done to make sure a high-quality product.

Good Customer Base:

Obtaining a BIS certificate is a great way for startups and established businesses to expand their customer base. For the reasons stated, the BIS certification gives consumers confidence in your goods.

Make it simple for the producer to win over the customer's confidence.

The BIS certification not only helps manufacturers increase market share, sales, and revenue, but it also gives them more power over their operations through enhanced monitoring, reporting, and management.

What are the certifications covered under BIS?

BIS covers many certifications, like

2) ISI (Indian Standards Institute) Certificate- ISI, or the Indian Standards Institute, is a certification program run by the Bureau of Indian Standards (BIS). This program certifies that a product can survive the BIS standards, which are in place to assure the product's safety.

Authorized Indian Representative (AIR)

An AIR (Authorized Indian Representative) must serve as the local representative for all applications for BIS certification to submit, maintain, and be available to answer questions regarding the certification application. If there are any problems in terms of compliance that can be found via market monitoring or imports, it is anticipated that the AIR will be present at BIS. If the AIR is not available to respond to the questions posed by the BIS, the registration will be canceled.

In general, the following are some of the responsibilities of the AIR:

  • Submitting an application.

  • Documents with original signatures are sent and received.

  • Coordinating the testing with the test lab.

  • Constant Presence to Answer Questions.

  • Proof of certificate receipt.

  • A point of contact for inquiries following the first certification (e.g. for follow-up certification).

In a brief, the Bureau of Indian Standards, often known as BIS, is a governmental entity that was founded to offer exhaustive standards considering the quality and safety of products, and every manufacturer or producer is expected to abide by these criteria.
